GENERAL NOTES

Releases are international unless specifically preceded by a country's name.

Subtitles in parentheses ( ) are official names. Subtitles in brackets [ ] are names I gave to some songs in order to differentiate between different versions e.g. [Shep Pettibone/Goh Hotoda mix] differentiates songs on The Immaculate Collection from their original versions.

Collaborations are only listed if Madonna is given main credit for a song. For instance, "Guilty By Association" (Joe Henry and Madonna) and "Be Careful (Cuidado Con Mi Corazón)" (Ricky Martin and Madonna) are listed. Songs like "Sidewalk Talk" (Jellybean), "Each Time Your Break My Heart" (Nick Kamen), "Scheherazade" (Peter Cetera), "Just a Dream" (Donna DeLory), "Get Over" (Nick Scotti), and "Queen's English" (José and Luis) are not listed because Madonna sings only backing vocals and/or is uncredited in the main entry of the release.

Live video versions do not necessarily have the same times, but for convenience are listed together.

With songwriting credits, the writer and publisher listed are from the most recent release, unless the difference from the original is negligible, e.g. (Madonna) vs. (M. Ciccone).

All songs are linked to Kenny Zalewski's Madonna Lyrics Archive. Many thanks to Kenny for maintaining this important archive.

Images are from official record company sites or from Madonnashots.

NOTES ON ALBUMS, FILMS, AND VIDEOS

Madonna's first album was originally released worldwide as Madonna in 1983 and repackaged outside the US as The First Album two years later.

The Royal Box is a CD/video or cassette/video boxed set comprised of The Immaculate Collection album and video, along with five postcards and a poster. Tracks on The Royal Box are not listed with separate entries.

The behind-the-scenes tour film of Madonna's 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour was released in 1991 as Truth or Dare in the US and In Bed With Madonna outside the US. It is available on home video, laserdisc, and DVD.

Erotica was released on CD in 2 versions in the United States: a "clean" version and an "unclean" version. The unclean version features the extra track "Did You Do It?" and a parental advisory sticker.

The Japanese version of Something to Remember includes the bonus track "La Isla Bonita". Later versions of Something to Remember in Latin America come with the bonus track "Veras".

The soundtrack to the film Evita was released in 2 versions: as a "highlights" album called Music from the Motion Picture "Evita" in October 1996 in Europe and Asia and in August 1997 in the US, and as "Evita" The Complete Motion Picture Music Soundtrack in November 1996 worldwide. The latter is a 2 CD set.

Ray of Light was released in the United States in both regular and limited editions in March 1998. The limited edition has different packaging. Ray of Light in Japan comes with the bonus track "Has to Be". A later Japanese reissue of Ray of Light contains a second interview CD called Words and Music.

WEA Australia reissued The First Album, Like a Virgin, and True Blue in late 1999 as a 3-CD box set as part of its "Original Masters" series. GT reports that WEA Australia also reissued The Immaculate Collection and Something to Remember as a "Take 2" set in 2000. GT also reports that WEA Australia released in 2000 The Ultimate Collection, a combined DVD release of The Immaculate Collection and The Video Collection 93:99.

Music was released in the United States in both regular and limited editions in September 2000. The limited edition is available in four different colors and features cloth and embossed covers. European versions of Music include the bonus track "American Pie". Australian and Japanese versions of Music include the bonus tracks "American Pie" and "Cyberraga".

The Immaculate Collection was re-released in Japan with an expanded booklet in November 2000, as reported by ES2. The Immaculate Collection, Ray of Light, and Music have been released in Europe on minidisc format, according to DM2 and GT.

German pressings of The First Album and Like a Virgin (with Into the Groove) were packaged together as a box set by "Warner Strategic Marketing France" in 2000, as were You Can Dance and Erotica, according to AN.

As part of the "Warner Remasters" series, Warner Brothers in Europe and the US released digitally remastered versions of Madonna, Like a Virgin, and True Blue in May 2001. These three albums were repackaged with "bonus 12" dance mixes that have never before appeared on CD", according to a press release.

In conjunction with Madonna's 2001 Drowned World Tour, Music was reissued in Europe as a 2-CD set in June 2001. Unlike the original European release, it does not include "American Pie" on CD1. CD2 contains previously released remixes of "Music", "Don't Tell Me", and "What It Feels Like For a Girl," as well as "Lo Que Siente La Mujer" and the video for "What It Feels Like For a Girl". JCA reports that the 1-CD Music was also reissued in Mexico without "American Pie" but with "What It Feels Like For a Girl (Above and Beyond club radio edit)" and "Lo Que Siente La Mujer".

A limited edition of GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2 was released in the US in 2001 with special packaging and additional photos.

In Germany, GT reports that the 14-track Erotica album and the remastered version of the Madonna album were re-packaged together and called "Madonna - 2 CD Hit Collection" (9640 019 349) in early 2003.

American Life was released in the United States in both regular and limited editions in April 2003. The limited edition includes a bonus poster and stamps. AN and JG2 report that a limited edition Taiwanese American Life CD was released in a foil bag along with a cardboard wrap-around CD sleeve, poster, and stickers.

The Remixed and Revisited EP was released in November 2003, with remixes of tracks from American Life as well as a live track from the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, "Like a Virgin/Hollywood Medley" (featuring Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears & Missy Elliott) and "Your Honesty", a previously unreleased track from the Bedtime Stories recording sessions.

American Life and Remixed & Remixed were re-packaged together as a single set in France as an "Édition Spéciale 2 CDs" in early 2004 (9362 486 732).

NOTES ON SINGLES AND IMPORTS

In 1986, Sire/WEA UK reissued Madonna's entire UK 12" single catalog to date on T.

LD notes that in 1989 Sire/WEA Germany reissued the Germany 12" versions of "Holiday", "Lucky Star", and "Into the Groove" on 3-inch CD single and again in 1990 on X.

Since 1992, Sire US has been reissuing many of Madonna's previous singles, in pairs, on C, D, and V with the "Backtrax" or "Back to Back" imprint and generic cover art. These releases are labeled "(reissue)" in the index. FMD reports that reissues of "Cherish/Express Yourself", "Crazy For You/Gambler", and "Holiday/Borderline" were never released on CD "due to a manufacturing glitch".

In 1995, Sire/WEA Germany reissued most of Madonna's German 12" single catalog on X with original cover art, up to "Cherish" ES. These releases are also labeled "(reissue)" in the index.

Warner Brothers Japan rereleased Madonna's 3" CD discography as a 40-disc box set (in 8" x 8" x 4" black box) in November 1997. There are numerous inconsistencies between the original releases and the reissues, and also with the track listings and the actual recordings. The 3" formats listed below refer to the original release. I have yet to organize these in the Song Index but you may want to browse the Japanese box set information I have collected so far.

In conjunction with the release of GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2, Maverick/Warner Bros. reissued the songs on the album (except for Don't Cry for Me Argentina) on 7" single in 2002 according to SH, presumably to stock jukeboxes.

With imports, I have included releases which include something different from the domestic (US) release. For instance, a separate "Germany" release has been included for a song because it contains an extra track or has a different track listing. However, I am trying to expand each song's listing so that every import format is listed.

Picture discs are not listed, as they contain the same tracks as regular singles.
